Summary

Chicago detective Annalisa Vega shattered her life, personally and professionally, when she turned in her ex-cop father for his role in a murder。 Her family can’t forgive her。 Her fellow officers no longer trust her。 So when detective Leo Hammond turns up dead in a bizarre murder, Annalisa thinks she has nothing to lose by investigating whatever secrets he hid behind the thin blue line。

Annalisa quickly zeroes in on someone who had good reason to want Hammond dead: a wealthy, fast-talking car salesman who’d gotten away with murder once and wasn’t about to let Hammond take a second shot。 Moe Bocks remains the number one suspect in his girlfriend’s brutal unsolved death, and now he’s got a new woman in his sights—Annalisa’s best friend。

Annalisa is desperate to protect her friend and force Bocks to pay, either for Hammond’s death or his earlier crime。 But when no one else believes the connection, she takes increasingly risky chances to reveal the truth。 Because both Hammond and Bocks had secrets to die for, and if she doesn’t untangle them soon, Annalisa will be next。

This is Joanna's second Detective Vega book and I have enjoyed both。 It is helpful to read Gone for Good first。 A fun read with a few cases together and suspense all the way throughout。 This is Joanna's second Detective Vega book and I have enjoyed both。 It is helpful to read Gone for Good first。 A fun read with a few cases together and suspense all the way throughout。 。。。more

If you're looking for a page-turning procedural series, this one is for you。 It's the second book in the series and it starts at the end of the first book dealing with the aftermath (so if you like to not have a book spoiled pick up Gone For Good )。 If you don't however care about that, you can start here and not be lost — you're given all the info you need。 Annalisa Vega is a detective, daughter of a retired cop, and not in many people's good graces。 Her ex-husband is also currently her partner If you're looking for a page-turning procedural series, this one is for you。 It's the second book in the series and it starts at the end of the first book dealing with the aftermath (so if you like to not have a book spoiled pick up Gone For Good )。 If you don't however care about that, you can start here and not be lost — you're given all the info you need。 Annalisa Vega is a detective, daughter of a retired cop, and not in many people's good graces。 Her ex-husband is also currently her partner — they don't hate each other, and I love this dynamic。 A new case is assigned to them which is just baffling: a cop was murdered in his sleep with his own gun while his wife was there but she was unharmed and can't identify the person because they were in scuba gear。 It sounds too far fetched to be real and Vega has her work cut out for her。 If you like messy personal lives of detectives you root for and fast paced mysteries, here you go。 Bonus: I enjoyed the audiobook narrator, Kelsey Navarro。(TW domestic violence/ mentions past suicide, no detail/ parent with Parkinson's/ sexual harassment and stalking stories)--from Book Riot's Unusual Suspects newsleter 。。。more

This was a new author for me 。 I never read anything from this author before but for the most part I really liked this book。 I thought the whole story was amazing。 I honestly didn’t want this book to end。 I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with on the next book they write。 I usually judge a book from the cover because for me it shows if it’s going to be interesting or not and I loved the book。

When I think of Detective Annalisa Vega, I think of one thing。 If you throw a stone, she'll throw a brick。Vega is the main female character in this latest offering from Joanna Schaffhausen。 And with throwin' bricks, you can suddenly be off balance and even throw in the wrong direction。 That's Vega。 Being hard-headed and biligerent is steam coming off of unchained emotions and not from analytical brain power。 But to this reader's dismay, Vega operates under both stimuli。Detective Vega even turned When I think of Detective Annalisa Vega, I think of one thing。 If you throw a stone, she'll throw a brick。Vega is the main female character in this latest offering from Joanna Schaffhausen。 And with throwin' bricks, you can suddenly be off balance and even throw in the wrong direction。 That's Vega。 Being hard-headed and biligerent is steam coming off of unchained emotions and not from analytical brain power。 But to this reader's dismay, Vega operates under both stimuli。Detective Vega even turned in her own fellow cop father for his wrong doings in Chicago。 She just operates that way。 Wrong is wrong and there's nothing in between。 Vega lives with the aftermath of her family on opposing sides and then the loose shrapnel littering her present life。 She's even partnered professionally with her ex-husband, Nick。 Now that's a story unto itself。There are never minnows in the big city of Chicago。 There's big fish to fry。 The body of Detective Leo Hammond turns up shot to death in his own bed。 His wife, Vickie, insists that a man in a wetsuit came out of their bathroom and shot Leo to death。 Seems a little farfetched from the shores of Lake Michigan。 All eyes are now on Vickie who insists she didn't do it。As Vega digs deeper into this case, she's drawing connections。 Leo was one of a clique of cops who had it in for Vega after her father's arrest。 There's also a link to a used car salesman that Vega knows killed his ex-girlfriend。 No proof yet。 Just a bucket of dying fish reeking to high heaven。 But Vega knows the net is widening。Joanna Schaffhausen has another winner here in Long Gone just like she did in the first book in the series, Gone For Good。 This one does read as a standalone, but it's definitely helpful to get the backstory from the first one。 While I do enjoy the character of Vega, I'd caution Schaffhausen to reframe Vega a bit。 The impetus of constantly picking up your sword and dashing off into battle even with a concussion and the like is beginning to wear a bit thin。 Vega is extremely smart。 I'd like her more calculating and analytical。 Women are always drawn out as having to "prove" something in the field。 Let's out brain the criminals and the naysayers casting shadows。 Pull Vega back, and just once, keep her from being an instant reactionary。 You catch more fish with a bated hook。 。。。more

This would make an AMAZING Netflix series or movie。 Like book #1, this was funny。 I love a police procedural with comic relief, it gives you a break from the murder and other traumatic events lol。 Also。。。 I'm #TeamNick。 I know, I know, he was a trifling ass hoe in the past。。。。 but THE HEART WANTS WHAT THE HEART WANTS!! Plus Annalisa is so stuck in the past with Colin, who knows if she'd really be vibing with his kumbaya ass now。 Damn like she finally solved your mom's murder and you're like GOTTA JET with not so much as a thanks。 Yes, the ending was OTT and similar to book #1 there was A LOT crammed in the last 10%。 But I'm Helen Keller to it。 Sometimes it's just like that。 Anyways。。。 August 2023 better come quickly because my body is ready for book #3!!!! PROS AND CONS Pros: well-written, fast-paced (legit nonstop action), a lil bit of everything。。。 romance, thrillz n chillz。。。 funny af, uniqueCons: ending was doing a lot again 。。。more

I loved how intricate the case was, and how beautifully it all slotted together at the end。 There's a complete contained investigation in this book, and I enjoy that with a series。 Of course, there were a few instances where I wanted to bean Anna over the head for being such an idiot, but for the most part, I really appreciate her character。 Joanna Schaffhausen is one to watch and I cannot wait to see what comes next! Much anticipated second installment to the Vega series。 I really enjoy Joanna Schaffhausen’s writing, her character’s depth, their passion with flaws and all。 Detective Annalise Vega doesn’t have many friends but she does have an ex-husband for a partner and he has her back and would like more than that。 When a detective is murdered, she suspects a man that is seeing her sister in-law/best friend and that complicates things。 Good as the first book!

In Joanna Schaffhausen's "Long Gone," Annalisa Vega is a Chicago detective who is dealing with a host of troubling issues。 She previously turned in a person she loved—who had committed a grievous crime—and he is serving time in prison。 As a result, some members of Annalisa's family and a number of her fellow cops treat her contemptuously。 Her ex-husband, Nick Carelli, is her partner on the force, and they still care for one another, although Vega prefers not to admit it。 Instead of dwelling on h In Joanna Schaffhausen's "Long Gone," Annalisa Vega is a Chicago detective who is dealing with a host of troubling issues。 She previously turned in a person she loved—who had committed a grievous crime—and he is serving time in prison。 As a result, some members of Annalisa's family and a number of her fellow cops treat her contemptuously。 Her ex-husband, Nick Carelli, is her partner on the force, and they still care for one another, although Vega prefers not to admit it。 Instead of dwelling on her problems, Annalisa throws herself into her work。 She and Nick are assigned to investigate the murder of a veteran police officer who was shot and killed while sleeping in his bedroom。 At first, Vega and Carelli suspect that Leo's young and glamorous widow did the deed。 However, when they look into the matter more closely, they learn that the victim was no angel; he had made a great many enemies during his years on the force。This is a fast-paced novel with sharply written dialogue and a masterfully constructed plot。 Schaffhausen explores her characters' motives, secrets, and fears, and shows that people sworn to uphold the law can be warped by greed, lust, and excessive ambition。 The author's plentiful red herrings keep us and her sleuths in the dark for quite a while。 Vega makes costly mistakes in her fierce determination to untangle a web of deceit with roots in the distant past。 Vega is a well-intentioned but impulsive individual who, according to her commander, is guilty of "blatant insubordination, legal violation, questionable judgments, and dangerous pursuits。" In short, Annalisa is so eager to see that justice is done that she cuts corners, putting both her career and safety at risk。 Her flaws notwithstanding, Vega is a shrewd detective who does not give up easily, even when a case seems impossible to solve。 Schaffhausen emphasizes that police officers who deal with horrific situations day after day must try to keep themselves emotionally grounded, lest become jaded and/or burned out。 "Long Gone" is an intense and involving whodunit that is enhanced by its sardonic humor, romantic elements, and clever twists that few will see coming。 。。。more
